‘Ní bheidh sé mar a bhí’ consists of an audio installation of reconstructed recorded interviews with some of the relatives of those killed in the McGurk’s Bar bombing of 1971. The installation offers a public space for those who lost their relatives to share their personal memories of grief and loss and to recall the events in their own words outside of the political and media spotlight. Over the course of 2021, the fiftieth anniversary year of the McGurk’s Bar bombing, Sinéad O’Neill-Nicholl recorded conversations with the relatives of those who were killed in the bombing. Through post-production techniques and audio editing software the artist examines the power structures created through language in the context of truth, knowledge and justice and is further interested in the methods used to silence the voice of the ‘other’.
